Florida responds to Shannon's comments

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow defended head coach Urban Meyer on Monday from criticism by Miami coach Randy Shannon about Meyer's decision to kick a field goal in the final minute of UF's 26-3 victory at Florida Field on Saturday night.
"The only part that really offended me is when he questioned coach Meyer, and I'll have coach Meyer's back on anything," Tebow said. "To say something like that about coach Meyer isn't true at all. He's one of the best coaches in the game. That's why I came to the University of Florida - to play for coach Meyer, play for the type of person he is. If you want to talk about him (negatively) you should definitely talk about a lot of other coaches before coach Meyer.
"You can talk about running the score up, I don't care. (Miami coaches) are paid to stop us and (offensive coordinator) coach (Dan) Mullen is paid to score. They don't do that, oh well. But you don't have to talk about coach Meyer as a person. That's not necessary."
During an interview with South Florida media on Sunday, Shannon gave the following statement when asked how the outcome of the game affected recruiting: "Sometimes when you do things, and people see what type of person you really are, you turn a lot of people off. Now, whatever you want to get out of that, I won't say it again. But it helped us. It helped us more than you'll ever know."
Meyer said after Monday's practice that he wanted to put the situation behind him.
"I've heard about the 25-year this, field goal this, officials this - why don't we talk about the players who played a great hard-nosed football game and quit measuring up to, worrying about Florida," Meyer said. "I learned a long time ago just coach your team and take care of yourself. Special teams, offense and defense occupies all our time so I'm good. We've got to move on."
Shannon is apparently upset about fourth-ranked Florida's final drive. After forcing Miami to punt for the ninth time, the Gators took over at the Hurricanes' 16-yard line with 1:56 to play. Florida threw on the first and second downs but couldn't convert on the third. Senior Jonathan Phillips made a 29-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining, his first career field goal.
"We're going to try to score through the whole game. That's our job and we like playing football," Tebow said. "We're going to be nice. We're going to shake their hands. We're going to do all that, be men, but we're not going to not try to score and I don't think that has anything to do with the type of person you are. It's not like we were up by that much - playing the University of Miami and we're only up by two touchdowns.
"I'm gong to defend my coach because I believe in him as a coach and as a person and I believe what he did was right and I didn't see anything wrong with it."
