Gary Patterson (TCU) wins Home Depot Coach of the Year

TCU coach Gary Patterson wins the Home Depot Coach of the Year award. Comments I've read state pretty much the award followed the well known script of "have a bad season then follow that with a 'surprising' good one." TCU went 4-8 last year then followed it up with an 11-1 record this year. So, in order to be a "good" coach you must suck every once in awhile. Interesting.

Urban Meyer has never won the national coach of the year. Nick Saban has only won it in 2003 (when he was at LSU)

2012 - Jim O'Brien

Patterson did a great job this year. Urban did a better job with more obstacles to overcome. Let's hope he gets the ultimate consolation prize - the NC! Then, we'll call it even.

There is no justification for Patterson over Meyer period

You know, being that there is an actual playoff now and the post season isn't just an exhibition anymore, shouldn't national awards be after the national championship game? I mean, coaching through a regular season is one thing. Winning a playoff will be infinitely harder, especially when the playoff inevitably expands.

I understand the sentiment, but if the BCS was merely an exhibition, the CFP is also, just with an extra layer. It is still not an NCAA officially recognized National Championship.

I think that extra layer makes all the difference. And it will more so when the playoff expands, as pretty much every expert believes it will (just as it did in the FCS, for instance).

And whether the NCAA "officially" recognizes the CFP or not is pretty much irrelevant, considering the amount of autonomy the big 5 now have. Those 5 commissioners pretty much run the FBS now, with the NCAA just playing the role of regulator.
