The Big Ten held its 100th wrestling tournament this past weekend and Ohio State saw varying levels of success. Most years, a 4th place finish at the Big Tens is a bit disappointing as we've had teams that should have finished much higher. This time, however, a 4th place finish is great. W/ major pieces of the championship puzzle being red shirted this year many knew this would be a rebuilding year. However, even in this rebuilding year the Buckeyes qualified 8 of 10 guys for the national tournament that starts in 1 week. Some notes of interest regarding the B1G tourney and the upcoming NCAA tournament:
Logan Steiber won his 3rd B1G title and is on track to become the 14th person in the history of the B1G to win 4. In the championship match he avenged his only loss of the season (the match was at PSU and he was sick...but the PSU kid is good) by beating his PSU opponent 7-3 (the match wasn't as close as the score). Logan has received the #2 seed at the NCAA tournament and will have to beat this PSU kid again in the semifinals (assuming neither lose before then) in order to punch his ticket to his 3rd NCAA finals appearance and hopefully his 3rd consecutive national title. 197lber Nick Heflin won his first B1G title. In large part because of who he's beaten over the past few weeks, Nick received the #1 seed at the NCAA tournament. If he wrestles to his ability he very likely could win an NCAA title next week. Freshman HWT Nick Tavenello punched his ticket to the NCAA tournament at the expense of the ttun HWT (and #1 nationally ranked). I was very plesantly surprised and the excitement was even greater when you took into consideration who/what school he was wrestling.
