Report: Bill O’Brien an “overwhelming favorite” for Texans job

Penn State coach Bill O’Brien appears to be the leading candidate to be the next head coach of the Houston Texans.

Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN report that O’Brien and the Texans are intensifying their talks with the hopes that they can come to an agreement to make O’Brien the next head coach in Houston. The report describes O’Brien as an “overwhelming favorite” to land the job.

Although O’Brien has reportedly told Penn State players and recruits that he’s sticking around, he has also reportedly tried to get Penn State to reduce the buyout that his contract requires an NFL owner to pay to pry him away. There would be no reason to do that if O’Brien weren’t interested in leaving for an NFL job.

The 44-year-old O’Brien has been Penn State’s coach for the last two years. Before that he was an assistant in New England for five years.

Houston fired Gary Kubiak during the season, which gave them a head start on finding a new head coach, and the Texans have already interviewed former Bears coach Lovie Smith, which means they have complied with the Rooney Rule. They can hire O’Brien as soon as they can come to a deal, and from the sound of this report, a deal could be coming soon.

Penn States loss... That program will suffer unless they get a Meyer, Saban type coach. Don't think new or upstart is the way to go for them.

Rumor: BOB has told his coaches that he is going to accept the Houston Texans job.

If true, sucks for PSU. I said before, I thought BOB was doing an amazing job at PSU for what he has been given. I thought if he stayed there for good, PSU would be one of the better B10 teams in 3-4 years.

Can't blame him though. The Houston job might be one of the better NFL jobs available if they're throwing a lot of money at him. They're not far out of contention and he gets the #1 pick this year. PSU will take at least a coupe of years to be contenders again and he'll never make NFL kind of money there.

Didn't hit that link. Assume it is about Bo'B was tired of the Paterno family and supporters...on espn this morning.
Sounds like the ncaa sanctions haven't fully fixed the culture there

Not tired of the Paterno family, the way I read it, but definitely tired of the supporters.

The NCAA sanctions didn't even come close to fixing the culture over there. Just go over to BWI if you need a good laugh. It's nick named Baboons With Internet for a reason.

Yup. I think they had a good one. He was riding out the storm and I believe he had the skills to make them a heck of a team.

He was a great coach, which is why many NFL teams wanted him.

If they can get James Franklin, I think the loss will not be much at all. Would love it, Take one from the SEC and get him to the B10.
