McGuffie, Others - done at UM?

That's the rumor going around:

In today’s weekly Big Ten teleconference, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said sophomore Zion Babb was no longer with the team. Rodriguez said the wide receiver hasn’t been with the team since Sunday.

So… yeah. I was sitting on this until I had some outside confirmation and this serves as outside confirmation since three guys were mentioned as a group of players who had already made their decisions. The other two who have told the coaches they are out: sophomore LB/S Artis Chambers and Sam McGuffie.

EVERYBODY PANIC.

Okay. Done panicking? Some context for this information:

How solid is it? Very solid. Three sources very close to the situation.

How official is it? It is not official until it is official. Earlier this year I said freshman RB Mike Cox was transferring based on equally solid info, but Cox reversed course and decided to stick out the year. Until someone actually enrolls somewhere else there is always the chance for a reconciliation.

Is this the end of it? No. The rumors are flying fast and furious about a couple guys buried on the depth chart; I don't have confirmation on anyone else and at this point I think they're still on the fence.

But the person who posted that has been wrong before so this is not 100%. Some people are saying it's not true.

I was pumped about gettng McGuffie, but have been disappointed. Yes, he's quick and can make things happen, but he doesn't turn upfield until he's well past the line of scrimmage. I mentioned this over on the crappy board about a month ago. He leads with the opposite shoulder, ie: if he's running left, he leads with his right shoulder. It's like he's afraid he's going to get hit so he runs sideways. Once he's in the open he squares up and runs downhill, but not until.

Maybe he'll join Homesick Boy, I mean Mallet, in Ar-Kansas.

While he is not a traditional Big Ten back he does fit well in RR's scheme. Or at least he would if RR could get it running. I was pretty excited to see McGuffie (except against the Buckeyes) getting the ball in the open field some over the next few years.

McGuffie had a death in the family. Perhaps he's dealing with that and any rumored notion of "quitting" or leaving is based on that...? After all the off-season recruiting garbage I no longer pretend to know the mindset of 18 and 19yr olds.

I don't know - I may leave the program as well at this rate.

If this is true, I find the rate of players leaving this program alarming. Of course, in reality, it's a very tiny percentage but it's unusual all the same, at least when considering it's "good" players leaving. RichRod had better start getting his guys in there quick and they had better perform well or his time at Michigan is going to be very short. Who knows, maybe he bails on Michigan after the year for another job. I still think in my heart of hearts that he had no idea what he was getting himself into when he took the Michigan job. These people, like OSU fans, live for their football team and losing isn't acceptable.
