Colsbeng- any word on how um D will shape up this year?
I'm not much of an expert on Wolverine (weasel to you) defense. I do know that there seemed to be a general consensus that last year's DC was not really ready for the job and the players seem to have more confidence in the new guy. GRob was a disaster as head coach at Syracuse (although I'm not sure who would be real successful there). He does have NFL experience coaching defense though, and I think that impresses players who would like to be on a pro team eventually.
Last year and this year, R2 has recruited some really fast players to be on the defensive side of the ball. This should definitely help with our problems playing teams like App State and Oregon and Illinois, especially since the DC has played against lots of spread teams in the BEast (including R2's) so he's familiar with what we need to do. It remains to be seen if these players are also big and strong enough to play the more traditional teams like UOS, PSU, and MSU.
It does help that Barwis knows exactly what R2 wants in a player he's recruited and I suspect these guys will end up stronger than your usual smaller player. Last year's recruits have now had a year in that conditioning program and observers say they look stronger and fitter than last year. Two of the key guys for this year's defense enrolled early so they have already started the training and conditioning program.
We had one very good defender from two years ago who missed all last year with an injury (sorry I don't remember his name).
Finally, we're kind of excited about using Stevie Brown in a manner more likely to utilize his skills better than at CB. It looks like he may be one of those guys people call "hybrids" (somewhere between a safety and a LB - at least one LB in R2's defense doesn't have to be big - speed is more important).
