USC’s projected starting quarterback – sophomore Aaron Corp – suffered a knee injury at practice and underwent an MRI on Tuesday. Results are expected back today, but Corp is not expected to be out for an appreciable amount of time.
What this does mean, however, is that true freshman QB Matt Barkley is getting all of the reps with the first team in practice. Barkley has been extremely impressive according to USC head coach Pete Carroll and even before Corp’s injury there was talk Barkley could win the starting job for the Trojans.
Barkley (6-3, 220) was one of the top quarterback recruits in the country last season and enrolled early at USC and went through spring football. There is no doubt he is the starter of the future; the question is whether Carroll will trust a true freshman to start at Ohio State on Sept. 12. For the record, he told ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd on Tuesday that he would have no qualms starting Barkley against the Buckeyes.
Corp (6-4, 195) played in five games last season as a redshirt freshman when he served as one of Mark Sanchez’s backups. (Mitch Mustain, who is a junior this season, also played a little bit at QB for the Trojans last year.) Corp is known as a solid quarterback that is an accurate passer and decent runner. Barkley has the much-higher ceiling, but Corp’s three years in the program could win him the job to start the season.
However, all of that is moot if Corp is seriously injured. We should find out more about his knee injury later today.
