USC takes another hit

In a bench pressing accident, USC running back Sefon(sp?) Johnson had the bar slip out of his hand and on to his throat. After he started coughing up blood, he was rushed to the hospital for emergency throat surgery. Looks like he is done for the year.

that is so indescribably awful - that poor kid. seven hours in surgery. he's definitely done for the year. this is one of those things where football pales in comparrison to the bigger picture.

i hope he's ok on and off the field.....

I agree w/ you Pabs. This is one of those things you have nightmares about but believe can't happen. Hope he recovers fully and quickly and can return to the field. He is a senior, so I especially feel for him. You know, after the pain of the injury has passed, he will be miserable having to watch his team from the sideline. The guy seems like a good guy. Never heard anything negative about him.

Apparently he did have a spotter, but he did not do his job. I have flattened out on the bench before, but the bar has never gotten near my neck, so this is a freak accident...unless he was doing the decline press.

I hope the kids OK. I dont use free weights so what kind of bench was It ? I presume it was an open plane bench. If so with todays technology why do they even use them open benches. $ 100 worth of steel work with a safety catch and the 2 are joking about how close that was.

Freak injury. Like MB said I've never heard a negative thing about Johnson and pray that he is okay.

UPDATE from College Gameday:

After 7 hour surgery Johnson is doing better. Still can't talk but can communicate with hand signals and writing. Also in good spirits. Out for the rest of the season but doctors said they expect him to make a full recovery and play football again. They also said that if this happen to a smaller guy that they probably would of died.
