Wow, is all I have to say, what a game. Leading up to the game, I talked big, but deep inside, I knew this would be close. Too close, and Miami proved to be the sickening pit in my stomach. Cincy has already heard from me, so no need to continue with that, but congrats Cincy, was a great game.
To the game:
What I learned - Dan Mullen, is not a very good OC. It's no surprise that in close games, he closes up like a clam, and only when we are ahead, and have the lead, do we open it up and get creative. Until the 3rd quarter, we stalled, stalled, and stalled some more. This isn't Tims fault, it might be the offensive lines fault, but not Tims.
I learned the Offensive Line NEEDS Jim Tartt. The left guard was getting worked all game, left his man blow through him, and get to Tim. Jim Tartt is a huge part of that offensive line. The right side did very well. But the left tackle was tired and let his end by a lot because of the play of the interim left Guard. We really missed Tartt last night, and it showed with the pressure on the quarterback.
I learned that Dan Mullen, doesn't want Tebow to take less hits, or become a pocket passer, unless we are playing shrimps. I was SCREAMING at my TV last night that "Tim CANT do it ALL!" or "WHY do we even RECRUIT other players? Lets just line up 10 Offensive Linemen and let Tim run the ball!" It was disgusting, and Dan Mullens doing.
I learned that we need a OC that will utilize all of our players, not just put the weight on the shoulders of 1 player. He can't do everything. We have Moody (1 rush, 2 yards all SEASON) from USC, who is sitting on the bench. Moore, did nothing last night. Mon Williams, hasn't see the field yet. What is the deal? We have running backs, USE THEM!
Percy looked amazing, Brandon James also. Louis Murphy, stalled many of our drives single handedly. Riley Cooper needs to get a lot of credit for all of his downfield blocks. He was pushing DB's back 15-20 yards. Jeff Demps, needs to sit. He needed to take a redshirt. What the fuck are we doing running him up the middle? PUT MOODY IN THE GAME! But that's Dan Mullen for ya. We don't need Jeff this year, this is a wasted year for him. I know he is fast, but we have the players this year already, sit him... But it's too late now.
Tim played with heart, fire, and intensity. That was a signature win for Tim. He stepped up when he needed to, and played calm in the pocket when he had the time. He waited a lot before he ran, and he always tired to make a play out of nothing. That's what he does. I was mixed about seeing him stopped at the goal line. I want to see him score, but seeing him get stopped time after time, put hope in me that Dan Mullen and Meyer will notice that they just cant punch it in anymore, and use other players. Tims throws looked amazing, only 1 or 2 that were off a touch, but all of the deep balls were spot on, and the only that got called back, was beautiful. He made all of the throws needed to win, and he did.
The thing is, Tim hasn't won a game where he has faced a lot of adversity. Auburn, we lost, LSU, we lost, Georgia, we lost, Michigan, we lost. I hope, this is a spring board for him, to build that confidence in his ability to come back to win a ball game. He can do it, and he proved it last night. Miami wasn't a top 25 team, but that was a signature win for Tim. We were never behind, but it sure did feel like it for most of the game. He always stayed confident and played like a leader.
Defensively, not much I can say but, wow. The defensive line played wonderful. They held the rushing game to 61 yards, and put pressure on the QB late to keep the comeback thoughts down. The Linebackers played well. Spikes made a lot of 3rd down stops to keep Miami off the field and to get our offense on the field. Too bad we had a Clam upstairs calling plays. DB's, they played very very strong tonight. Given they were going against a young QB, and young receivers, but they got some 'big game' experience and played well, even when the offense wasn't helping. No INT's but they played solid enough not to need them.
Carlos Dunlap, get used to the name, the man is a freak of nature. He played beautifully last night, destroying that right side of the Miami offensive line, and pressuring the QB all game. Credit to Dan McCarney for getting the defensive line back up to snuff.
To Miami. What people need to remember, is that these are the same kids Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, USC, Georgia, recruit, year after year. Their team speed showed last night. We could NOT get to the sideline, because they have very athletic players. Experienced or not, it's hard to get to the sidelines against that team speed.
Miami played, and executed their game plan perfectly for 3 quarters. Run the ball effectively, get first downs, and keep Florida's offense off the field. Flawless. Marve looked great, played with poise. Just like I told Cincy, they need to stick with Marve, and not play musical QB. Put Harris in for a change of pace, but do not mess up Marve's rhythm like they did last night by subbing out Marve. Too bad about the other RB for Miami getting hurt, hope he gets better for ACC play.
Miami will play a lot of teams tough in the ACC because of their defense, but at the end of the day, the offense isn't quite there against the good defenses. Yet... It will be though, soon. They will be a surprise I think for many people. Don't count out that defensive speed, and offensive talent.
Anyways, other topics...
First off, the play that got reviewed. Not a good call, in my opinion. Unless, they ruled that the Miami player forced out the receiver... Then it doesn't matter if he catches the ball or not. But as I understood it last night, it just looked like a bad call. The Miami fan's throwing crap onto the field was... typical. It's a bad call, but don't trash the field. I hope the people involved were arrested, and escorted out of the stadium.
Secondly, as for Urban Meyer 'running up the score'... This is a rivalry. If OSU could put up 48-0 on Michigan this year, you guys would love it... We couldn't run the clock out, why take a knee? Just GIVE them the ball? Um, no. Do you want us to run it? What if Miami misses a tackle? Now we REALLY look bad... FG was the only reasonable way to end that drive that started with a GREAT punt return. Miami did the same thing to us in 1980, so I guess consider it payback for that, and throwing garbage on our field, slash, running your mouth before the game (Xavier Shannon, and Co.) Like Musberger said last night, Football is a beauty contest, style points are needed... we BARELY beat out Michigan in 2006 for a championship because of 'style' points.
Also, consider this: In 2006 (NC year), our FG kicker, Chris Hetland, who was a Groza award candidate coming into the season, didn't attempt a FG until the Tennessee game (3rd game of the season) and missed a big one. Chris wasn't the same the rest of the season, going 4/13 in FG's before the NC game, when he had 2 successful. I would rather Urban hang 3 more on the Canes, and get experience in a big game environment, then have a green kicker, come in during Tennessee in 2 weeks. Phillips needed the experience. I'm glad he did it.
Cincy, you know, Miami would have done the same thing. We can both agree, if we are up 92-3 on each other, and there is 10 seconds left in the game, you are on the 5 yard line, you would want to punch it in, AND go for two, just so we could hang 100 on each other. At least, as fans, that what I would want.
Anyways, good game. Flame away, i'm not about to fight with you guys. Cincy's opinion is the only one I care to know.
