We are reaching the half way point in the wrestling season, and it has proven to be a tough one thus far. OSU has lost against Pitt, Nebraska, and PSU thus far. To their credit, PSU is ranked #3 right now, but the Buckeyes didn't even put up a fight against them losing roughly 42-3 (in other words, we lost 9 out of 10 matches). Our schedule doesn't get any easier as we have Iowa in mid/late Jan and the National Dual Tournament later this month.
The sub-par performance can be explained by looking no further than the the expected vs actual starting lineup. The injury bug has torn the OSU linup to bits. The expected Freshman all American at 125 (who was a 4x Ohio High School State champ) is out for the year with a broken hand, the 141 pounder (another 4x Ohio high school state champ) as well as the back-up 157/165 pounder (another 4x Ohio high school state champ) are done for their careers due to injuries. The Buckeyes are down this year partly due to inexperience but also in part to injuries. Let's hope the 2nd half of the season brings pleasant surprises.
On a brighter note, the OSU wrestling team is sporting one of the top (if not the top) recruiting classes for the next 2 years. That is a welcome sight and MIGHT translate into that elusive national title for the wrestling Buckeyes. We will see.
