Updates on 2010 NCAA wrestling

Thus far, here's what's happened.

184 pigtail match: Pucillo (OSU) lost 4-2

125: Triggas lost 8-7 (match is under protest)

133: Paddock won by pin

141: Humphrey wins 11-3.

That's all I've got so far.

149 lbs: Lance Palmer won 8-1

The protest was denied. Triggas officially lost.

165lbs: Sponseller won by pin!

174: Dave Rella lost 8-0

197: Cody Magrum lost 5-3

HWT: Corey Morrison lost 5-2.

Tough way to start the day, but not unexpected with these last 3. I thought Triggas would have won his first match, but he's inconsistent at best. Rella is merely a shell of the wrestler he was a mid season. Morrison had a very tough 1st round draw. Magrum nearly pulled his match out, but just not a big enough guy to hang with the top level wrestlers. All is not lost, though. If we get 141, 149, and 165 into the semi finals, we will be right up near the top of the leader board...especially if the others can win in the consolation rounds. many a team title were won in the coso rounds.

We are 10 min from starting the evening rounds. So, here is a breakdown of what went on last night and this morning.
Triggas won last night in consolation rounds and 2x this morning. Is wrestling in 5 min for AA status

Humphrey is in champ semis
Palmer in champ semis

Sponseller lost last night but won this morning and is also wrestling for AA status
Pucillo won last night and 2x this morning and is also going for AA status this round

All other Buckeyes have been eliminated (Paddock, Rella, Magrum, and Morrison)

We are tied for 3rd right now w/ Iowa St. Iowa is leading right now and won't be caught.

Rough night tonight. Won the first one at 125 to guarantee All American status for Triggas. Lost at 141 champ semis and will wrestle tomorrow to get into the 3rd place finals. Won at 149 and Palmer will get a shot at the title tomorrow night. Lost at 165 and 184. Both Sponseller and Pucillo were eliminated. Not sure where the team stands, but this night's performance really hurt us.

Heard Minnesota(another B10 team) wasn't doing good either this tourney.

All in all, OSU had a down year at the NCAA tourney when compared to the previous 2. The Buckeyes finished in 8th place overall and had only 3 All Americans. In the previous 2 years, they had 3 in the championship finals alone. Things didn't pan out this season like it did in the previous 2, but there are some good things to be taken out of this. Our young guys showed a lot of promise for next year and beyond. Two were freshmen and another was a junior (one of the All American).
Lance Palmer lost a close match in the finals, but he can leave with is head high. He stuck it to Brent Metcalf and pushed him to the limit. Great match and great career by him.

This sucks Mikey. First the Hockey team tanks and now the wrestlers. OH well hope ya had a good time.

It was a blast. Got to meet Lance Palmer (OSU's 149lber) as I was heading out of the tournament. VERY nice guy. He's the kind of guy you find yourself pulling for. Just a nice guy all around. NCBG would like him because the kid is ripped!
