It's official. Lance Palmer of OSU gets the #1 seed over Metcalf. Kyle Ruschell of Wisconsin is in his half bracket (Ruschell has beaten Palmer this year). Reece Humphrey is the #4 seed. We didn't get a very good draw at 125 and 133. If Niko (125) wins his first round, he faces the #2 seed second round. If Ian Paddock (133) wins his first round, he has the top seed 2nd round.
Colt Sponseller is the #5 seed and is in the same half as Andrew Howe (top seed who beat him at the Big Tens). Mike Pucillo is the #10 seed and would face the Illinois guy (Dergo) who beat him at the Big Tens should they both win their first 2 rounds. They would meet in the quarterfinals. Getting there is no sure thing, however, as Mike has the 2009 NCAA runner up at 174 lbs first round. In my opinion, the NCAA committee blew it w/ how they paired the guys who made the tournament. There is NO reason 2 runners ups should be facing in the first round of a tournament.
All in all, we qualified 8 out of the 10 weight classes. 157 and HWT are the only weight classes we didn't qualify at
I don't know how good I feel about this for the OSU wrestlers. Lance obviously has the best shot at the title. I also see no reason why Reece can't win his weight class too. He's already wrestled the #1 seed and lost on a weekend when he was wrestling badly. He can take that guy.
I'm just hoping for an All American finish for Pucillo (184 lbs) and Sponseller. Sponseller has to figure out how to beat Howe if he wants a shot at the title. Fortunately, he wouldn't face him until his All American status has been guaranteed. It's an uphill battle for a number of our guys though. We will see what they are made of. Should be interesting.
