Butler headed to Italy
Shawnee grad Jamar Butler is bound for Italy.
Butler, a three-and-a-half year starter at Ohio State, signed a one-year contract with Caserta, Italy on Tuesday to play in the A1 Italian professional basketball league.
Butler will report to Caserta on Aug. 18. The season runs for 10 months from September to June.
"To be honest, he's ecstatic about it," said Butler's agent, John Spencer. "He had the hamstring pull so he couldn't make it to (try out for) New Jersey. This is a great situation for him.
"Right now, he's in the healing process and doing light cardio."
Spencer added that Butler will have an "out clause" in his contract in the event he is contacted by an NBA team for a 10-day contract during the Italian season.
Caserta plans to use Butler as a point guard, according to Spencer.
Butler finished his Ohio State career with 1,313 points. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.9 assists a game this past season and was named first team All-Big Ten by the media.
He is the Buckeyes' career leader in 3-point field goals (242) and assists (580). He hit 104 3-pointers this season.
The 6-foot-2 guard was the named the most valuable player at the NBA pre-draft camp in Portsmouth, Va., in May. He wasn't able to attend a pre-draft camp in Orlando prior to the draft because of a pulled hamstring.
Butler wasn't selected in the recent NBA two-round draft.
"I'm not sure that any player gets over that (not being selected in the draft)," Spencer said. "Every player's dream is to play in the NBA. He's excited about this opportunity and chance to be evaluated by NBA scouts."
