Overall - D-: This was collectively a failure as a team. Coaching was bad, the offense was bad, the defense was good in spots, but had some major flaws that killed the team, the special teams had one great play and several very, very bad ones. Anything outside of a repeat was destined to be a disappointment this season, so now the season is a disappointment. Hopefully the Bucks can pick themselves up off the mat and put together a great game against scUM and salvage the season somewhat.
Offense - F: Wow. I didn't think we'd EVER see an Urban Meyer led offense look this pathetic, but here we are. JTB was constantly pressured and had nowhere to run, but when the play WAS there to be made, he seldom made the play. Although he had a lack of carries (12), Zeke was not very effective with the ball, only managing 33 yards. Zeke normally only gets stronger in the second half but was not given the opportunity to show that. Thomas had drops. Marshall had drops. The offensive line was bullied all night. Just terrible all around.
Defense - D+: This was the hardest grade for me. While the D only gave up 17 points (more impressive when you consider Sparty's starting field position most of the night), they were far from dominant. Add in the fact that Sparty was down their starting QB, and this performance takes an even bigger nose dive. Penalties were killer, especially from Bosa (THREE offsides penalties, and all of them on 3rd or 4th down I believe). Apple was not great in coverage, getting beat often, and having a back breaking penalty on a 3rd and 14 (that drive ended in a TD). The DL got zero push in the second half as well, when they KNEW Sparty was only going to run it.
STs - D: If not for the recovered muffed punt, this would be an F. Johnston straight up shanked a punt (bad snap, but had plenty of time to get it off) and his last punt was partially blocked. OSU NEEDED Johnston to boom that one in order to force OT, and he didn't. Marshall did an adequate job of punt return considering the conditions.
Coaching - F: If there were a lower grade, they would get it. I don't know what to say that hasn't been said. The "gameplan" on offense seemed to be "run the ball with JTB, and if that doesn't work, try it again". It was EXTREMELY conservative in a game where OSU was favored by two touchdowns. They were playing not to lose out of the gate, instead of trying to win. Meyer has offered zero explanation for what happened or what the thought process was. This team BADLY misses Tom Herman, and that is sadly apparent now. Tim Beck appears to be out of his depth, and the worst part is that this team is LOADED, and all that talent is going to waste. I am not calling for a coaching change on offense, as that would be a knee jerk reaction, but Meyer needs to figure out what happened this game, why it happened, and what to make sure that it NEVER happens again.
