Overall - C-: Lots of bad, little bit of good, but overall an underwhelming performance against a middling team at home. Broken record, no? I almost feel like giving OSU (especially the offense) an incomplete due to the QB situation, but even with JTB out, OSU should have routed this Minny team, and it didn't happen. Grade could have been a little higher if the D hadn't let up two quick scores at the end, but they were really the only positive of this game, so can't get on them too much. Best part of being 9-0 is the chance to go 10-0.
Offense - D-: When the first points of the game come from your defense, late in the 2nd quarter, against a bad team, at home, you know it's a bad day at the office for your offense. Minny challenged Jones to beat him with his arm by stacking 8-9 players in the box all game, and they won that challenge for most of the game. OSU had 47 yards going into their first scoring drive of the half. I already made my opinion of the QB play apparent in another thread, so I am not going to rehash it here. Stats-wise, Jones was 12-22 for 187 and a TD, no picks. EZE topped 100 yards again, but needed 26 carriers to get there, for an average of 4.4 YPC, which is well below his season average of 6.5. The OL was spotty for parts of the game as well. 28 points is unacceptable for this team against any opponent, but especially against a bad Minny team at home, double especially when 7 of those come from the D, and TRIPLE especially when one of those TDs comes with under 2 minutes to play.
Defense - B: The D stepped up big time to help the offense. If it wasn't for a big game from the D, there is a not outside chance that OSU loses this game. They imploded a bit at the end, and allowed Minny to pass for almost 300 yards. Some of that can be attributed to Minny being forced to throw it 44 times due to a stout run D (26 for 33 yards...wow!) and being behind, but there were still a few big plays through the air allowed at the end of the game that allowed Minny to get within striking distance. Powell had his normal "ooo, look, a gift wrapped interception, hope I don't drop...DAMN IT!" moment of the game, but Bell made a great pick and return, so that evens out. The DL was dominate, as usual.
STs - C-: Kickoff OOB and missed FG were bad. Punt returns, kick off and punt coverage were good, but not spectacular. The missed FG could have ended up really costing the team and probably will down the road.
Coaching - C: Defensively, this was a great game. Offensively, I don't know if they coaching staff didn't have time to prepare (unlikely), was ill prepared (possible), or prepared but changed the game plan when Jones struggled through the first 25 minutes (possible). It APPEARED as though they tried to get some deep plays opened up early, but even with the box stacked, the offense was unable to execute. When WRs DID get open, the throws weren't there. It looked like the coaching staff was content in the second half to go into a shell and hope the D could win the game for them. It worked, but it was painful to watch. A win is a win, though...I guess.
