Overall - A: Disclaimer - Rutgers is bad at football. That being said, OSU looked as good as they have looked all season, and they have played some very bad teams. I was MOST impressed by the defense, as Rutgers had been fairly competent on offense all season. The offense looked a lot more fluid with JTB at the helm, but Rutgers is putrid on D, so we have to take that with a grain of salt. Still, a 49-7 shutout (sorry, garbage time score against 3rd stringers don't count) and you'd be hard pressed not to give a squad an A. Oh, and no penalties, OSU hasn't done that in a long, long time.
Offense - A: Outside of a very bizarre turnover to stall the first drive (I was terrified that JTB hurt his knee), OSU looked as good as they have all season. It may not be their highest point or yardage total, but they looked a LOT better doing it. JTB reminded us all why he was a Heisman finalist last season, completing almost 80% of his throws for 223 yards and 2 scores, along with over 100 rush yards for 2 more scores. He had great touch on the short and intermediate passes, and looked great on some deep throws as well. Zeke, as he has done a few times this season, was quiet in the first half but blew up in the second. Oddly enough, OSU lost the TOP 28:32, but that was mostly due to short scoring drives due to either big plays, short fields, or both. All in all, it was about as flawless a performance as we have seen from the offense all season.
Defense - A-: Outside of the first drive and last drive, the defense dominated. The DL was monsterous again, and Bosa keeps getting better as the season progresses. Carroo ended up with 100 yards receiving, but the passing game was kept mostly in check the entire game. The rush D still concerns me. Yes, Rutgers only managed 149 yds rushing (170 if you don't count the sack yards), but they still allowed the two main backs to rush for 147 yards on 26 carries, good for 5.6 ypc...not great. Still, an effective shutout game (again, last second garbage TD against 3rd stringers don't count in my book) , 3/13 third down, only 18 first downs, and this is a very good performance.
ST - A: Not much here. KO coverage was excellent, no punt return yards (only 1 punt), decent punt returns by OSU, no kicks OOB, no muffs, no missed xps (no FGs attempted), the STs did their job and were mistake free.
Coaching - A: Rutgers had a good opening drive and then...nothing. OSU's coaching staff did an excellent job of adjusting defensively and stopping a pretty solid offensive team in Rutgers. Offensively, they did a great job of game planning for JTB. This may have been as simple as "let's do what worked last year", but it was nice to see them call plays to get him comfy, and watch him do what he does best.
