Overall - B: 38 points against a very good D combined with only 10 pts allowed and very good STs play, overall a solid performance. The lack of any passing game along with being gashed on the ground keeps this from being a higher grade.
Offense - B-: Run game was an A+, passing game is a D, but 38 points, no matter how you slice it, against a very good PeeSU D will get an above average grade from me. EZE quietly had over 100 yards again, JTB showed why this offense was lethal last year with him at the helm, and Jones...well he may have played himself out of a starting job (more on that later). Overall, it was a good performance in the 2nd and 4th quarters while the 1st and 3rd were forgettable. OSU is slowly getting back to form, however.
Defense - B-: Pass D was an A, rush D was a D, pass rush was an A+++++++++. Bosa and crew laid down a checkered table cloth in the backfield and had themselves a lovely little picnic. Hackenberg was under consistent pressure and was clearly never comfortable. Outside of a 56 yard reception, Hack was 6/12 for 64 yards, that is damn good D, and a lot of that can be credited to the DL making his life a nightmare. The rush D, however, was not good. While they did step up in crucial short yardage situations, Barkley had his way with the D. Barkley is a special talent to be sure, but 194 yards rushing is unacceptable. I don't know how much of that can be attributed to losing Perry to an ankle injury (get well soon!) but after getting gashed by running QBs in back to back weeks, and now this, OSU has to get the run D figured out. They did last season, though, so...
STs - A: The MVP of the game, IMO, is Johnston. They Aussie pinned PeeSU inside the 8 3 times, and was pivotal in keeping this game in check until the offense found their legs. The only FG attempt was a success, no kicks went OOB, the return game as okay, and the coverage team was solid (save for one return to the 35). All in all, a near perfect night from the STs.
Coaching - INCOMPLETE: This grade is dependent on what happens with the QB situation moving forward. I think that the coaching staff may have finally come to the realization that, due to a very shallow pool of serviceable WRs, this offense simply operates better with JTB. Yes, if the deep threat of Smith along with the edge blocking of Spencer were still prevalent, or if Brown and C Smith were both still healthy, the Jones experiment might be firing on all cylinders. As it stands, however, this coaching staff has zero faith in any deep routes. Without that, Jones becomes a very marginal QB, and that was on full display Saturday. He misfired BADLY on at least 4 open receivers I can remember, and this offense was stagnant for the first and third quarters. When JTB came in, the offense started clicking. Meyer and co have forgotten more about football than I could ever hope to learn, but if this Saturday wasn't an indictment of the current QB situation, then I don't know what is. So, if JTB is named the starter, then I will give the coaching staff a B for this game. If not, then they didn't learn much and it will be an F.
