The play calling has me nervous as we move forward. We saw the speed option being run w/ Cardale in the game. That is NOT his game. As we saw, if you want the speed option you need to have JT in the game. Hopefully they evaluate themselves and learn from those wasted downs.
JT is probably my most favorite Buckeye on this team. The guy went from "The Man" last year to being the backup this year. However, you saw him actively engaged on the sideline...especially talking w/ the young players who haven't had much playing time. Great guy and I really hope he stays through his senior year.
Those suspensions were more significant than I expected. Bosa's absence was genuinely felt. The guy who filled in for him did a serviceable job but he's not Joey. Likewise, imagine how bad this game would have gotten had we had 4 more experienced WRs on the field. 2 dropped passes by one of our WRs (one that would have been a TD).
Michael Thomas is a threat to ANY DB out there. He absolutely took a very talented DB to the woodshed tonight.
And now the not so good...
The O-line seemed to have taken a step back. Not sure if it is because of the scheme that was run tonight or what but they didn't seem as dominant as last year. The good part is they were light years ahead of where they were during this same game last year. The O-line play doesn't concern me that much right now but when we get deep into B1G play any bad habits that were engrained during the season will be exposed and will be very costly. Don't get me wrong, they didn't look bad (Cardale had time to scan the field on most passes) but they didn't look like they did at the end of last year. Certainly this isn't an area I'll be losing any sleep over. Just an observation.
Braxton is STILL the most electrifying man on the team. If EZE doesn't get the Heisman I hope Brax does.
There is still some work to do on our D. There were some soft areas that VT was exploiting while Brewer was in there and the throw back pass still got us TWICE!!!! This D is pretty good but have a lot of work to do and very few real tests to gage their improvement.
All in all, a very good and entertaining game. I attribute a good share of the miscues to the suspensions and young players being in there for the first time. However, this team has by no means arrived....and that's a good thing.
