Ok, I for one am excited for baseball. The Reds may be average this year, but hey, I am still a baseball nut.
So some co workers and I were discussing the best players of the past 30 years or so, and it got me thinking, what is the best player at each position in the 30 or so years I have been studying the game. I have a starting 8 in mind (no DH), and 5 starting pitchers. Here is what I got, would love to hear some people's ideas as well.
Starting pitchers:
Maddux (no doubter)
Pedro (same)
Clemens (same)
Big Unit (same)
Steve Carlton (Could be Kerschaw in a few years)
Carlton is a bit of a stretch due to the years I picked, but he was a beast, and I needed another lefty!
C: Pudge. Dude was a beast behind the dish and a hell of a hitter as well
1B: Pujols edges out Frank Thomas. Not a fan, but dude was a beast for over a decade
2B: Alomar. Maybe the most complete 2B in the history of the game
SS: A Roid. Lot of players I hate on this list, but for a long time he defined the position
3B: Mike Schmidt. Another player that was on the cusp due to the time frame, but he is easily the best 3B I have ever seen
LF: Bonds. Not even close
CF: Griffey. People some times forget just how amazing he was his first 12-13 years. Maybe the best defensive OF I have ever seen
RF: Rickey Henderson. I am sure many will argue this, but put him in the leadoff spot, and watch the whole game change.
