Never heard of him. Although my center in high was Sam Smith. Sadly just recently passed away.
That's his semi-retirement job. He's written for multiple publications(Times, Tribune, etc) plus has written a few sports books, most notably one of the more famous ones "The Jordan Rules".
It's incredibly hard to get a gig writing for a sports teams site and most of the writers are either talented up and comers that do freelance work or semi-retired guys like Sam that are done with the hustle and bustle.
And sorry about your friend passing. Never forget the bond between teammates.

Basketball ain't my game, but seriously, I am so tired of athletes in pro sports "championship shopping". Just stay with your team and do your best. I don't know why these guys feel the need to move on every few years. There is no team loyalty anymore. Guess that's why I like college sports better.

That's bad on my part I read some of Jordon Rules. And I'm sure the guy was/is a fine writer but only working now for a website for a different team leads me to believe it is all speculation with no corroboration. I think he said that even. So it's just writing it to stir imo.
