About Matthew - abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=277685 - It does bring up some solid questions.
Have you spend much time with Gay or Lesbians? Tell you a quick story. Tammy, my gold star lesbian friend was at my house and a neighbor's brother came over. He is gay too. During the conversation, he mentioned getting it on with his partner last night. Not the details. Tammy was mortified. She kept quiet but when he left she expressed how she felt. She did not want to know about stuff like that. It made her sick. I replied - "Like I want to hear about your strap ons." They do not even "get" each other sometimes. She may be more sensitive b/c gold star means she has never had intercourse with a man. Yet we are supposed to understand? I just overlook it and see the person.
As for the South, see my post about how diverse it is here.
If I was a homophobe, I would care more about a gay butcher touching my meat than a basketball player. He could give me HIV!!! The BB player will probably never effect my life. It is the day to day gay people that can make people understand and respect them. He even calls out other gay guys that give them a bad name.
This would be a headline to me is if he was the first gay person. The headline to me is he is black and gay. I have only met one before.
That's an interesting view point on the Shepard case, have never heard it before. I am not sure it wasn't hate motivated, but I don't think we will ever know.
Yes, I have a gay friends and my uncle is gay, so I spend plenty of time around them. I am not certain what the point of your story was, can you elaborate? If it's that your lesbian friend's reaction to your gay friend talking about having sex "disgusted" her, I don't see what that has to do with anything. I have friends that don't want to hear about the sex lives of anybody be it gay or straight. Some people are just more closed off about that stuff.
I know you are not a homophobic person. Nothing you have said leads me to believe you have any hate or anger towards homosexuals, and you certainly seem to be very accepting of them. I apologize if I gave you the impression that I thought you were homophobic, that was not my intent.
I am not sure how he "calls out" other gay people or gives them a bad name. I am sure we are simply going to have to agree to disagree, but a student athlete in a MAJOR sport ( or football) is a pretty major event still. To date, I can only think of THREE collegette, professional, or former professional male athletes that have come out as gay, so it is still a big deal. And regardless of how YOU feel about gay people, as a whole the country is intollerant of them, so there is a stigma attached to it and I guarantee that this player will receive a lot of negative tweets/emails/letters about his actions, which is why I think what he did is brave.
