OSU 2010 baseball season = started

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State baseball team is ranked 14th nationally heading into the 2010 campaign, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced Monday.

The Buckeyes are the highest-ranked Big Ten team ahead of Minnesota (30th), Michigan (RV) and Illinois (RV). Two other Ohio State opponents, Louisville (19th) and Tennessee (RV) are also mentioned in the rankings.


Last week, the Buckeyes were ranked 24th in the PING! Baseball Preseason Top 30 poll.
Ohio State opens up the season Feb. 19 at North Florida.

#14 Ohio State have started 3-0 to start the season.

First game was against North Florida where Ohio State won 4-2. Ace Alex Wimmers picked up the win with 6IP 1H 9K 0ER.

Second game they beat Florida A&M 16-1.

Today they beat Richmond 20-9! Coach Todd got his 1,000 career win.

Last year the Buckeyes won the B10 regular season title and try to repeat.

Buckeyes now up to #13 have improved to 5-0.

On Friday Ohio State played South Florida and ace SP Alex Wimmers went 8IP 5H 1BB 1ER 6SO to improve his record to 2-0 this year. He is now at 14IP 1ER and 15SO for the season in 2games(2-0).'

Today Ohio State trash ND 10-2

Ohio State takes on Cincinnati tomorrow at 1:00PM

Yeah that was ugly.

They did win 2 games today out of 2.

Record up 11-4 and ranked #27 in the nation now.

The problem seems to be starting pitching. We have one ace in Wimmers(who threw the no hitter vs UM last year)!

His stats this season:
4GS 4-0 2.00ERA 27IP 21H 33K

Last year he was 9-2 with a 3.27ERA

Oh yeah. Since you can't enter the MLB draft till after your Junior year(if you decided not to go after HS) he could enter the draft for next year after this season.


Here is one scouting report on him:
Suggested Draft Slot: Late 1st- 1st Supplemental

So probably a first round draft pick in next year MLB draft. The only problem about baseball is you never know what prospects will end up good or bust. It's a huge gamble and the hardest sport to draft. So he will get a chance for sure.

16-8 and took 2 of 3 from Northwestern. Pretty good recovery from losing 3 of 4. As Big 10 play begins the buckey's season will start to take shape. Hopefully we can win the Big 10 again and Do better in the tournament (lost 37-9 to Florida State which was the worst loss in buckey history).

I went to the first game of the Big 10 tourney last year for Ohio State at Clippers stadium. Will do the same again most likely.

Wimmers Fans 14 In Buckeye Win

Last year's Big Ten regular-season champion Ohio State baseball team rematched the squad that won the league's tournament title in Columbus, the Indiana Hoosiers, on Friday night in Bill Davis Stadium and got some revenge. Alex Wimmers tossed a six-hitter and the top of the Buckeye order set the tone in OSU's 7-1 victory.


Ohio State ace pitcher Alex Wimmers fell behind 3-0 to Indiana leadoff hitter Micah Johnson to start the game Friday night, and the Hoosier took advantage by driving a double deep to right field.

In a matchup of last season’s Big Ten regular-season and tournament champions, not much else went the Hoosiers’ way. Wimmers was the reason why.

The OSU star struck out the next three batters after Johnson to ignite one of the best outings of his career, tossing his first complete game of the season as the Buckeyes earned a 7-1 win in front of a chilly 1,296 in Bill Davis Stadium.

“I had the stuff going so leave me out there,” Wimmers said of the complete game. “Help us save pitching for the rest of the weekend. I felt today that I could throw any pitch at any count to any batter.”

He finished with 14 strikeouts, one off of a career high, while allowing only six hits and the single earned run. Wimmers didn’t walk any batters and rarely seemed close, throwing 85 strikes among his 121 pitches while improving to 7-0.

“Once he settled down, I think there’s no doubt he made it awfully tough on Indiana’s hitters tonight,” said OSU head coach Bob Todd, whose team improved to 18-8 and stayed atop the Big Ten at 3-1.

The Hoosiers (14-14) entered averaging more than eight runs per game but didn’t get anyone to third base until No. 9 hitter Tyler Rodgers tripled and later scored in the eighth. Indiana’s Nos. 3 and 4 hitters, Jerrud Sabourin and Alex Dickerson, entered with a combined .463 average with 18 homers and 70 RBI but they were the final two strikeout victims of the first.

From there, Wimmers fanned two batters in each of the next three innings to get to nine Ks after four – all swinging. That was a result of having his fastball, curve and a nearly unhittable changeup all working at the same time.

“I knew Indiana is a great team coming in and they’re a good fastball hitting team,” Wimmers said. “If they’re not going to be able lay off my changeup I’m just going to keep going at them until they make an adjustment.”

Even two of the Hoosiers’ hits were infield singles, leaving the Buckeye outfielders bored.

“Honestly when he throws I don’t even need a glove out there sometimes,” left fielder Zach Hurley said. “I know I’m not going to set a single fly ball. I think this year when he’s thrown I’ve got two balls hit to me on the ground. That’s it. I don’t expect much action when he’s throwing, especially tonight. He had everything working for him. They had no chance.”

Instead, the Buckeyes had to get their action at the plate, which they did with 10 hits and six walks. Hurley, the team’s leadoff hitter, was 3 for 4 while No. 2 hitter Cory Kovanda was 2 for 2 with two RBI and three walks and cleanup bat Michael Stephens had a homer.

Kovanda and Hurley hooked up in the first when the former, OSU’s second baseman, doubled in Hurley after he drew a leadoff single.

“We live together and we’re always talking about sparking the team,” Hurley said. “That’s what we take pride in.”

Stephens’ homer doubled OSU’s advantage to start the fourth inning, as his seemingly harmless fly ball to right field sliced along with a gusting wind and dropped just over the 330-foot sign at the right-field foul pole.

“Honestly, there’s certain times that I know when I get them, and that one I didn’t feel like I got so I was just hauling,” he said with a laugh. “But after I started watching I thought, ‘I got that one enough.’ They all count.”

OSU increased the lead to 4-0 by the end of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ryan Cypret and a bases-loaded walk by Kovanda. Cory Rupert singled in Stephens in the fifth, Dan Burkhart’s sacrifice fly scored Cypret in the sixth and Hurley singled in Brian DeLucia in the seventh.

Just got done watching the Ohio State @ Michigan State game on the B10 Network today.


Buckeyes won 4-3 @ Michigan State and has taken the first 2 of the 3 game series. It was tied 2-2 going into the 9th till OSU got a big 2out base hit to give them a 3-2 lead. MSU made a pitching change and on the first pitch it was a wild pitch and made it 4-2 Bucks. Michigan State got a lead off HR in the bottom of the 9th to make it 4-3 but then the next 3 got out.

Alex Wimmers pitched yesterday in the first game. He went 8IP giving up only 1ER and 7SO in a 10-1 win. He is now 8-0 on the year with a 1.80ERA. Unstoppable!

Ohio State is now 6-2 in the Conference and 21-9 overall and first in the B10.

So far in the Big 10 they took 2 out of 3 from NW(@nw), 2 out of 3 from Indiana(home) and have taken the first 2 out of 3 from Michigan State(@msu).


As for the women softball team this year:
They're 25-11 and 4-1 in the Big 10. That has them in 3rd place right now. Michigan is first at 31-5 and 7-0 in the Big 10. Iowa is 22-14 and 8-1 in the Big 10. Ohio State hasn't played as many Big 10 games because 2 games vs Purdue were cancel due to weather. They're ranked #20th in the nation though.
