That's what I see in Cardale and why I prefer him at QB. He has this intangible quality that JT simply doesn't have. The VT game last year proved he didn't have it. If a defense finds a way to stop JT's running, then he has nothing left. Cardale doesn't only do well under intense pressure, he needs pressure. He needs the big games against the best teams to do what he does. That's when he calms down and just plays. When he's expected to dominate, he doesn't, and fans cry about it like little babies. Throw him into an impossible situation where everything is stacked against him and he is the underdog and he excels. That's the kind of QB I want.
But keep hating the guy you "fans". I'm sure all you "fans" care about is JT scoring as much as possible and ending his football career to run a car dealership in Columbus like so many QBs out of Ohio State that couldn't play in the NFL.
To Keln's point: I don't think it matters so much the level of competition that Jones has been playing, moreso that he has SOMETHING to lose this season (his job, millions in the NFL draft, etc) and so he isn't playing all "loosey goosey" like he was last season. Combine that with the lack of a real deep threat and you get Jones from this season.
To ABM's point: I think the coaching staff has been TRYING all season to call games that help Jones, but a combination of not having the players to do that (see: no deep threat as I mentioned above) and Jones simply not playing well really handcuffed them. They have been trying to make their round hole into a square hole to accommodate Jones all season, and it just hasn't worked. Hell, they removed the read option almost entirely, which has been a staple of the Meyer offense, just to get this offense to work with Jones.
Something else to remember: While Jones' run in the post season last year was amazing and will forever be enshrined in OSU history as one of the greatest feats we have ever witnessed, his numbers were rather pedestrian. It's not like he was chucking the ball 40 times a game for 300+ yards. He definitely made some huge plays, and if he wasn't there OSU wouldn't have even MADE the playoffs, let alone win it all, but I think we are romanticizing his ACTUAL numbers a bit. I love Jones, and I think he is going to be by FAR the most successful NFL QB that OSU has ever had, but for now, this is the right move.
