What are your thoughts on Matta

Yeah, I don't see any reason for him to not be around. He's just never going to leave anyone in awe of his actual coaching skills. While both are preferred, I'll take the guy who can recruit over the guy that can coach.

Calipari is an average game coach but has all the talent and it works for him.

Agreed. After suffering through the Randy Ayers JailBlazers era, I am not eager to make a change.

Ken brings forth a great point though, if Matta were to retire - who could we possibly get to replace him? Sean Miller perhaps, but he hasn't wowwed me all that much either.

Well, you could certainly have the debate that Miller is a better recruiter than Matta, or at least on par. Why not his brother, Archie? Seems like a good recruiter and is one of the best game coaches out there. Perhaps Shaka Smart? Brad Stevens if he isn't happy in the NBA?

I'd love Brad Stevens, but I don't see him leaving the Celtics. Would take him in a heartbeart though.

Don't know enough about ARchie Miller (other than he coaches at Dayton and Jordan Sibert liked playing for him)

I would love for us to get either of the Miller brothers or Shaka Smart. I feel if they came, our program would take a big upswing.

I will try to be as un-biased here as possible here. I would give Thad a B to B plus. He has sort of made two Final Fours (heh), and won his share of B10 titles, and that gad not happened in a while at OSU. However, with all the resources at OSU, I would have thought they would be top ten pretty much every year. He seems to only really do well if he has a dominant inside presence, as that seems to help his offensive sets. His best years at OSU for the most part were with the likes of Oden and Sullinger.

And honestly, I would give him a B as well when he was at Xavier. Almost anyone could have been a top 10-15 coach with D West there, but he got out coached several times in the tourney when he had two AA's in West and Sato. Then his last year at XU, we were 9-8 going in to the UC game...won a one point game, then went on an insane run. Mid way through that season people wanted him fired....two months later he was the hottest commodity out there, and used that to get the OSU job.

So as an over all coach/recruiter, I give him a B. He is a very good coach, but not in the class of the elite coaches out there IMO.

As for the other coaches out there, I am hearing Barnes is gone at Texass, and I am guessing they are going after either Smart or Archie Miller. I fucking HATE Dayton, but damn Archie has proven he can flat out coach.

That's all they've done is underachieve. They had the squad with Durant, Augustin, and Abrams and got waxes by USC in the second round.

I am not sure how I would feel with Shaka Smart - never really cared for the guy. Seems shady to me for some reason. Of course I've never met the guy and am basing it on limited TV exposure, but just a gut feeling
