I been big on this guy since we got him but he hasn't been that great since he came to Ohio State. As you know he missed the 1st but it looks like Small will be back for the 2nd game.
Receiver Ray Small practiced extensively yesterday and should return this week from a high ankle sprain that kept him out of the opener.
Small was Ohio State's No. 3 receiver and top punt returner in spring practice before suffering the injury Aug. 11. He sat out against Youngstown State but should play Saturday against Akron.
"He took quite a few reps today, so we're excited about where he is right now," quarterback Todd Boeckman said.
Receiver Brian Hartline said Small moved around well.
"I think he's feeling OK. He was catching punts, moving on (the ankle), planting on it," Hartline said.
Coach Jim Tressel said the key will be to resist the temptation to overwork Small and risk aggravating the injury.
"Where I think you have to be smart with injuries is right when it looks like a guy is ready to come back, we all, player included, tend to overdo it," he said. " 'OK, we've got Ray back, we want to do a couple of these things,' or whatever, so we've got to be smart. I'm hoping he can progress and help us and become one of the guys."
Nine receivers made catches in a 38-6 victory over Youngstown State. In Small's absence, freshmen Dane Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington have stepped into the Nos. 3 and 4 roles.
I hope Small can come back and be the guy he was in high school.
Go Small and Go Bucks!
